11 Jun 2010 Oxford

We were pampered as breakfast was served to our room - a full hearty english breakfast no less. What a wonderful way to start off the day. Due to its convenient location, we took the bus to town to explore oxford. The passengers were very polite to the driver - they actually greeted the driver and said thank you when alighting.

My impressions of oxford were of the old buildings - one could easily tell this was a town of 'learning'. When we were at the heart of oxford as alot of old institutional buildings abound!

We started off by walking to the Bridge of Sigh.

What was a well kept secret is the stairway leading up to the spire in the University Church of St Mary the Virgin - with 127 steps! We nearly missed it if the receptionist did not mention this to us on our way out after visiting the church! Warning: one must not be afraid of heights or be claustrophobic though as the ancient staircase is very narrow and so is the parapet where one can have a 360 degree panoramic view of the town. Definitely not for the faint hearted. I kept wondering on the climb up what i was going to do if someone was coming down the stairs??? Do i go all the way back down again and resume my climb again? Fortunately, we had a good uninterrupted climb both ways! Phew.

We didnt want to enter Christchurch College, so we took a leisurely walk back to the bus stop.

The shopping area of Oxford.

Along the way, we saw this sport equipment shop - the Blacks. I wasn't of any intention to shop honestly - then what happened next was that I came out with some quick-dry t-shirts and a backpack. I couldnt resist the offer! And the salesperson were all polite and knowledgeable. They were really out to make your day. The price seemed reasonable. A 80 litre backpack for just 35 pounds. I grabbed it instantly.

At 2pm, we started driving to Lake District. There was some jam along the motorway due to some accidents where we were reduced to a crawl. Along some sections we could smell the dung, presumably from the farms on both sides of the motorway M6. Then finally we exited at Windermere and reach the B&B at 630pm. Not bad eh?

Jim greeted us at the doorway. He shared with us where to go for the next few days and told us that there is quite a good chinese restaurant in town - The Magic Wok. We tried - friendly boss and good food!

The red colour shop is Magic Wok =)

Then we continue to wander around, and hit a very big Booths supermarket - thats where we decided to spend for the rest of the evening. Everybody got something. I got kiwi haha!
